Javelina Hunting

Hunting the javelina on the San Carlos Apache Reservation can be a great experience for any hunter. Javelina are hard to spot from a distance due to their gray colored hair and small size. Spotting one of these small animals sometimes turns out to be a real job but when you do locate a herd, the action begins. Planning a stalk on a good javelina can be a challenge but usually is quite possible if you know their habits. Being able to calculate and judge their next move and to where and when they move will prove to be the answer in harvesting one. Just watching them during their feeding and movements can be quite educational but just as you think you may have them figured out and where they are headed, they throw you a curve ball and end up "finding you" instead of you finding them. When that happens you are caught off guard and cannot move and you can almost figure on doing another stalk on them after the bust you and run into the sticks. Being able to stay one step ahead of them does require some homework and studying them any way you can. At other times they can be completely naive and almost walk right into your trap. Several things work when you hunt the javelina and most of these are proven in one way or another but to be absolutely sure you will be successful at harvesting one of these creatures, homework is on top of the list of knowing what to expect and do.
